The grounding electrode conductor, the GEC, is the wire that connects the service’s grounded conductor and equipment to the grounding electrode system. It is sized from the service-entrance conductors, not from any breaker, and the code wants it as continuous, direct, and permanent as you can make it, because its cargo is lightning.
Why it matters on the job
The GEC is the one conductor on the service whose sizing logic routinely trips up electricians, because it breaks the habit of sizing from overcurrent devices. There is no breaker protecting a GEC and no breaker in its sizing math. It exists for surge events, so its rules are shaped by surge behavior: big enough to survive, short and straight because high-frequency surge current hates bends and length, and unspliced because a failed joint in this wire fails silently and is discovered by lightning.
The sizing logic
The NEC sizes the GEC from a table keyed to the largest service-entrance conductor. The pattern to internalize: the bigger the service conductors, the bigger the GEC, stepping up through familiar pairings, 8 AWG copper for small services up to 3/0 copper for the largest, with 4 AWG copper sitting in the middle for common residential services.
Then come the electrode-based caps, and they are the part exams love. Because some electrodes cannot deliver more current than a modest conductor can carry, the code caps the GEC when it runs to nothing beyond that electrode:
- To a rod, pipe, or plate electrode: never required larger than 6 AWG copper.
- To a concrete-encased electrode: never required larger than 4 AWG copper.
- To a metal water pipe or where the GEC serves the whole system: full table size, no cap.
Installation rules follow the same surge logic: run it without splices where practical (irreversible splices excepted), protect it from damage, and keep ferrous metal enclosures around it bonded at both ends so they do not choke the surge current.
Worked example
A 200 A residential service uses 2/0 copper service-entrance conductors. The electrode system is a metal underground water pipe supplemented by two ground rods.
- From the table: 2/0 copper service conductors call for a 4 AWG copper GEC.
- The run to the water pipe serves the electrode system generally, so it is full-size: 4 AWG copper.
- The conductor to the rods runs to rods and nothing beyond, so the cap applies: 6 AWG copper is the largest ever required there, even on this 200 A service.

Where it bites
- Sizing from the main breaker is the classic wrong answer. The GEC table keys on service-entrance conductor size. A 200 A service with oversized conductors for voltage drop gets a GEC sized to those conductors.
- The 6 AWG rod cap is a maximum requirement, not a command. You may run larger; the code just never makes you. Exam questions test whether you know it is a ceiling on what can be demanded.
- Loose lugs and painted surfaces at the electrode end undo everything. The connection to a rod lives in dirt and weather; use listed clamps rated for direct burial and put them where they can be inspected.
- Ferrous conduit sleeved over a GEC and left unbonded acts as a choke, adding impedance exactly when the conductor is doing its lightning job. Bond both ends of any ferrous raceway around it, or use nonmetallic.
Exam relevance
GEC sizing is one of the most reliably tested calculations at both journeyman and master level: given service-entrance conductor size and electrode types, pick the GEC size, including the rod and Ufer caps. Expect trick options sized from the overcurrent device, and installation questions on splicing, protection, and ferrous enclosure bonding. Know the table’s pattern and the caps cold; this is free exam credit for anyone who has sized three services.
