Box Fill Calculations

Box fill is a volume calculation: everything inside an outlet box claims a share of its cubic inches, and the claims cannot exceed what the box provides. You count the contents by a fixed set of rules, convert the count to volume, and compare it to the number stamped in the box.

Why it matters on the job

Conductors crammed into an overfilled box get nicked insulation, stressed connections, and no room to dissipate heat. Overfill is also one of the easiest violations for an inspector to spot: they open the box and count, and so should you, before the mud goes on. The calculation takes 60 seconds and saves a re-rough.

The counting rules

Everything in the box converts to a number of conductor equivalents, then each equivalent is charged a volume based on wire size. From your code book’s table: #14 = 2.0 in³, #12 = 2.25 in³, #10 = 2.5 in³ per conductor.

  • Insulated conductors: each conductor that enters the box and is spliced or terminates counts 1. A conductor passing through unbroken also counts 1.
  • Equipment grounding conductors: all of them together count 1 (recent editions add a quarter count for each additional beyond the first; your edition governs).
  • Devices: each yoke or strap, a receptacle or switch, counts 2, charged at the largest conductor connected to it.
  • Internal cable clamps: one or more count 1 total, at the largest conductor in the box.
  • Pigtails and wirenuts: conductors that originate and stay inside the box count 0. Fittings such as locknuts and bushings also count 0.

Multiply each count by its volume, sum, and compare against the box volume: stamped inside metal boxes, molded into nonmetallic ones, or from the code book’s table for standard metal boxes. A 4-inch square box, 1½ inches deep, is 21.0 in³.

Worked example

A 4-inch square, 1½-inch-deep metal box (21.0 in³) has two 12/2-with-ground NM cables feeding one duplex receptacle, with internal clamps.

  1. Insulated #12 conductors: 2 per cable × 2 cables = 4 counts.
  2. Equipment grounds, all together: 1 count.
  3. Cable clamps: 1 count.
  4. Receptacle yoke: 2 counts.
  5. Total: 4 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 8 counts × 2.25 in³ = 18.0 in³. Under 21.0 in³, the box passes.

Now a third 12/2 cable is looped in for a downstream run. That adds 2 insulated conductors: 10 counts × 2.25 = 22.5 in³. Over 21.0 in³, the box fails, and the fix is a deeper box (a 2⅛-inch-deep 4-inch square gives 30.3 in³) or an extension ring.

Count everything by its rule, charge each count at the wire’s volume, compare to the box

Where it bites

  • The device count is 2, always, even for a single-pole switch. Forgetting the yoke charge is the most common way a passing box turns out overfilled.
  • Grounds are 1 count total, not 1 each. Counting every ground triples the ground charge in a 3-cable box and fails boxes that pass. Know your edition’s quarter-count refinement, but never count them all at full value.
  • Pigtails are free; through-conductors are not. A conductor passing through unbroken still counts 1. The test is whether it entered from outside, not whether it got cut.
  • Mixed sizes charge at their own volume, except devices and clamps, which charge at the largest conductor connected or present. A #14 switch leg in a #12 box does not get everything at 2.0 in³.

Exam relevance

Box fill is a guaranteed exam item because it grades method, not memory: the volumes are in the exam code book. Points are lost on the yoke’s 2 counts, the collective ground count, and charging clamps per-clamp instead of once. Practice until the count takes under a minute, then the volume lookup is free.
