Journeyman Requirements by State

There is no national electrician license. Every state, and in several places, every city, sets its own hours, exams and renewal rules. This page teaches the pattern so the jurisdiction pages, as we verify them, slot into a picture you already understand.

The three structures

1. State-licensed, one board licenses electricians statewide. The most common pattern; Texas (verified: TDLR, 8,000 hours, annual renewal, 4 hours CE) is a clean example.
2. Municipally licensed, the state licenses nothing; cities do. New York is the famous case: no state electrician license exists, and New York City licenses through its Department of Buildings. Chicago licenses separately from Illinois.
3. Hybrid, a state framework with significant local add-ons or carve-outs.

What actually varies

• Hours: the ~8,000-hour norm holds widely, but how classroom time counts, and whether experience can substitute for apprenticeship, is state law.
• Exams: different vendors (PSI, Pearson VUE, state-run), different NEC editions, different open-book rules.
• Renewal: one to three-year cycles; CE hours from about 4 upward, usually tied to code updates.
• Reciprocity: real but patchy, specific state-to-state agreements, often journeyman-only, often with conditions. Never assume; verify with the destination board before moving.

For your own jurisdiction the sequence never changes: identify the actual issuing authority (state board, or the city, per the structures above), read its current candidate bulletin, and take hours, exam and renewal facts only from that document. Facts on this site marked as verified cite the issuing authority and the date we checked; everything else is the pattern, not your rules.

Where it bites

• Moving states mid-apprenticeship is the expensive move. Hours transfer imperfectly; finish where you started if you can.
• Municipal licenses do not follow you out of the city, and suburban jurisdictions around big self-licensing cities each have their own rules.
