The Journeyman Exam: What It Tests and How

In learning paths: Journeyman Electrician Exam Prep

Assumes you know: The Journeyman Electrician License

The journeyman electrician exam is an open-book code exam taken against the clock. It does not reward memorizing the National Electrical Code; it rewards knowing where answers live and moving fast. Understanding that single fact changes how you should prepare.

What it tests

Jurisdictions vary, but the recurring blocks map closely to the trade’s working curriculum. A published example: the PSI journeyman outline used by Texas allocates its 70 questions roughly as wiring methods and devices (18), services (11), grounding and bonding (7), overcurrent protection (6), general knowledge (8), motors (4), alarm systems (6), with the remainder across transformers, lighting, low-voltage and special occupancies, 180 minutes, 70 percent to pass. Your jurisdiction’s numbers live in its candidate bulletin, but the weighting lesson is universal: wiring methods, services and grounding carry the exam.

The published Texas outline: where the marks actually are

How to prepare

  1. Get the candidate information bulletin first. It names the exam vendor, the NEC edition, timing, question count, and what you may bring. Studying before reading it is studying blind.
  2. Confirm the code edition. States sit one or two cycles behind the newest NEC. The right book matters more than any study guide.
  3. Drill navigation, not recall. For any topic, practice getting from question to code article in under a minute. Tab your code book to the extent your board allows.
  4. Make calculations automatic. Conductor sizing, box and conduit fill, voltage drop, motor circuits. These are covered as lessons in the Learn section, and they are free marks for a prepared candidate because the method never changes.
  5. Practice timed. The exam fails more people on pace than on difficulty. Full-length timed runs, code book open, no exceptions.

Where it bites

  • The clock is the opponent. Roughly 2.5 minutes per question sounds generous until a load calculation eats eight of them. Bank the fast questions first; mark and return.
  • Local amendments are examinable where jurisdictions amend the model code.
  • Open book breeds false confidence. If you meet a table for the first time during the exam, the book is a maze, not a map.
