Filtration and Pressure Drop

An HVAC filter removes particles by forcing air through media, and that media resists airflow. Filter selection and maintenance must balance air-cleaning performance with the pressure the fan and system can tolerate.

Why it matters on the job

A filter upgrade can improve particle removal and still reduce airflow if the system cannot carry the added pressure drop. A dirty filter creates the same conflict over time. The correct question is not only “What MERV?” but “At what airflow and pressure drop?”

Measure across the filter

Install pressure taps on the entering and leaving sides of the filter bank. The difference is the filter pressure drop. Compare it with the clean reading and the manufacturer’s final recommended value for that filter and system.

Pressure drop turns filter condition into a trend instead of a visual guess

Particle loading usually increases resistance. Higher efficiency often increases pressure drop, but media area and thickness matter too. EPA guidance notes that a thicker filter can have lower pressure drop than a thinner filter of similar efficiency because it can provide more media area.

Bypass defeats the filter without showing a large pressure drop. Check racks, gaskets, clips, doors, and gaps so air cannot take an easier route around the media.

Worked example

An illustrative filter bank reads 0.18 in. w.c. when clean. Months later it reads 0.43 in. w.c. at the same airflow.

  1. Increase: 0.43 − 0.18 = 0.25 in. w.c.
  2. Relative increase: 0.25 ÷ 0.18 = 1.39, or about 139%

The trend confirms that resistance increased substantially. Replacement timing still follows the filter and equipment manufacturer’s limits, not a universal pressure number.

Where it bites

  • Compare at similar airflow. Pressure drop changes when airflow changes.
  • Visual condition is not enough. A filter can look dirty before its final drop, or bypass badly while looking clean.
  • Do not force a higher-efficiency filter into an inadequate rack. Check dimensions, sealing, fan capability, and available static pressure.
  • Shut equipment down safely for filter changes. Prevent loose material from being drawn downstream.
