A drainage fixture unit, or DFU, is the load rating a code assigns to a fixture, and drain sizing is the bookkeeping of adding those ratings downstream and reading pipe sizes from a table. A DFU is not a gallon count. It is a probability weight that reflects how much a fixture discharges, how fast, and how often.
Why it matters on the job
Every drain, branch, stack, and building drain you install has a size, and an inspector can ask you to justify any of them. Oversize everything and you waste money and lose the scouring flow that keeps pipe clean. Undersize anything and the system backs up on the day the load peaks. DFU arithmetic is also a guaranteed section of the journeyman and master exams.
Why probability, not gallons
Fixtures almost never discharge at the same time. A method worked out by Roy Hunter for the federal Bureau of Standards in the 1930s turned that fact into a unit system: rate each fixture, add the ratings, and let the table convert the total into a pipe size that covers realistic peak use rather than the impossible everything-at-once case. That is why 20 fixtures do not need a pipe 20 times bigger than one fixture.
The working rule: DFUs accumulate downstream. Every section of pipe must be sized for the total of all fixture units draining through it.
Using the tables
Both model codes publish two kinds of tables: one assigning DFU values to fixtures, one giving the maximum DFUs a pipe of each size may carry. The capacity tables split by role, because a vertical stack carries more than a horizontal branch of the same size, and a building drain’s capacity rises with its slope. Three rules travel with the tables everywhere:
- A drain never gets smaller in the direction of flow, even if the table would allow it.
- A water closet needs at least a 3 in drain under both model codes.
- The values are code-specific. The UPC and IPC agree on some ratings, a lavatory is 1 DFU in both, and disagree on others. Read the adopted table, not your memory of the other book.
Worked example
Size the horizontal branch serving one private bathroom: lavatory, shower, water closet.
- Lavatory: 1 DFU under both model codes.
- Shower: 2 DFU is the common rating for a standard residential shower.
- Water closet: the two codes rate it differently, 3 DFU under one table and 4 under the other for a typical private 1.6 gpf closet. Take the governing value; call it 4 to be safe here.
- Total: 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 DFU.
- The water closet forces the branch to at least 3 in regardless of the total. Checking a branch table, a 3 in horizontal branch carries 20 DFU under the IPC; the UPC table gives a different figure, and both are comfortably above 7. The branch is a 3 in pipe.

Where it bites
- Continuous flows are not DFUs. Pumps, AC condensate, and other steady discharges bypass the probability logic; codes convert them separately, typically as gpm added on top. Rating a sump discharge in DFUs undersizes the drain.
- Stack tables are not branch tables. The same 3 in pipe carries different totals as a stack, a branch, and a building drain. Using the wrong column is the classic exam trap and a real-world one.
- Minimums override arithmetic. A single water closet totals only a few DFUs, but it still gets a 3 in drain. Fixture outlet minimums and the no-reduction rule beat the table whenever they collide.
- Future fixtures count now. Roughing in for a future basement bath means those DFUs belong in today’s sizing, or the future remodel starts with repiping.
Exam relevance
Expect a drawing with a dozen fixtures and a demand to size every section, done open book against the adopted code’s tables. Speed comes from method: write DFU values at each fixture, add downstream, apply the 3 in water closet minimum and the no-reduction rule, then confirm each section in the correct table. Practice with the code your jurisdiction uses, because the fixture ratings and table layouts differ between UPC and IPC.
