The Journeyman Plumber License

The journeyman plumber license is the credential that lets you work as a plumber in your own right rather than as someone’s apprentice. It is the first exam gate in the plumbing career ladder, and in most of the country it is mandatory: unlicensed plumbing work at journeyman level is illegal in most jurisdictions, not merely frowned on.

Why it matters on the job

Until you hold a journeyman license, your hours belong to someone else’s supervision. With it, you work independently on the tools, your hourly rate steps up, and the clock starts on the experience most jurisdictions require before you can attempt the master plumber license, which is where running your own shop becomes possible.

The typical path

Plumbing licensing is run by states, and in several states delegated to counties or cities, so the exact rules live with your local board. The pattern most jurisdictions follow:

1. Register as an apprentice. Most jurisdictions require registration from your first day on the tools.
2. Accumulate supervised hours. A completed apprenticeship of roughly 4 to 5 years, in the region of 8,000 on-the-job hours plus classroom instruction, is the standard shape, often via a registered apprenticeship program.
3. Apply and document. Boards audit hours and supervision. Keep signed records throughout your apprenticeship; reconstructing them years later is painful and sometimes impossible.
4. Pass the journeyman exam. Code-heavy, applied, and specific to the plumbing code your jurisdiction has adopted. Covered in detail in the next lesson.
5. Renew on schedule, with continuing education required in many jurisdictions.

Where it bites

• Two model codes. The US splits between the Uniform Plumbing Code and the International Plumbing Code, adopted and amended state by state. Your exam and your inspections follow your jurisdiction’s code, and answers that are right under one code can be wrong under the other. Know which one governs you before you study anything.
• County and city licensing is common in plumbing. More than in most trades, plumbing authority is delegated locally in several states. The state website is not always the end of the story.
• Hours under an unlicensed supervisor may not count. Boards typically require supervision by a licensed journeyman or master. Verify your supervisor’s status early, not at application time.
