Who issues it

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) licenses electricians statewide. Exams are administered by PSI under contract to TDLR, with the details published in a candidate information bulletin.

The verified requirements

• 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician licensed in Texas is required for licensure.
• You may sit the exam early: submitting at least 7,000 hours lets you take the examination before reaching the full 8,000 required for the license.
• Application fee: $30, non-refundable; exam fees are separate, per the PSI bulletin.
• Licenses are valid for one year from issuance and renew annually.
• Renewal requires 4 hours of continuing education per license cycle, from a TDLR-registered provider; unapproved courses do not count. Hold both master and journeyman licenses and a single 4-hour course covers both renewals; the hours must be completed during the term of the license you are renewing.

Texas is a supervision-hours state, not a classroom-hours state: the 8,000 hours are earned working under a Texas-licensed master, and TDLR verifies them at application. Where it bites

• Hours must be under a Texas master. Out-of-state experience goes through TDLR’s reciprocal and out-of-state licensing routes instead; do not assume it counts one-for-one.
• Annual renewal comes fast. A one-year cycle with a CE requirement punishes autopilot. Put renewal and a CE booking in your calendar the day the license arrives.
• The initial application is a mail-in. Renewals are online, but the first application goes by post; build the processing time into your exam planning.
