The Master Plumber License

The master plumber license is the top individual credential in plumbing and the key that unlocks contracting. A journeyman works independently; a master takes responsibility: for designs, for permits, for the journeymen and apprentices under them, and, in most jurisdictions, for a plumbing business as its qualifying party.

Why it matters

In most licensing jurisdictions a plumbing company operates under a master’s license. That makes the master license the practical bottleneck for starting a shop, and masters valuable everywhere: a company without one on staff cannot pull permits.

The economics follow. Masters price at responsibility level, not labor level, and the license is the prerequisite for the contractor path covered in the final lesson of this sequence.

The typical route

Details are set by your jurisdiction; the shape is consistent:

1. Hold a journeyman license and work under it, typically for around 2 or more years. Some boards count hours instead of years.
2. Document everything. Boards audit the journeyman period the same way they audited apprenticeship hours.
3. Pass the master exam. Expect the journeyman scope plus system design and sizing from scratch, heavier code navigation, and in many jurisdictions business and administrative content: permits, inspections, responsibilities of a master.
4. Renew with CE, on the board’s cycle.

Where it bites

• The master exam adds design. Journeymen check installations against code; masters size systems from plans. If you have never done a full DWV and water sizing exercise from a drawing set, that is your study priority.
• Some jurisdictions add business-law content to the master exam or attach it to the contractor step. The candidate bulletin tells you which side of that line your board draws.
• Specialist endorsements ride on the master ticket in many places: medical gas and backflow work, covered in the specialisation subject, often assume or prefer master status.

This is the second exam gate of the trade. Everything from the journeyman exam remains testable, with system design layered on top.
