The Journeyman Plumbing Exam

The journeyman plumbing exam is an applied code exam. It does not ask what a trap is; it asks what size, what slope, what venting method, and which table in your jurisdiction’s code says so. Passing is a navigation skill as much as a knowledge skill.

What it tests

Question pools vary by jurisdiction, but the recurring blocks map to the working curriculum:

• DWV. Drain sizing by fixture units, trap requirements, cleanouts, and above all venting: methods, distances, and sizing. Venting is the classic point-loser.
• Water supply. Distribution sizing, pressure and flow, water heaters and their safety devices, cross-connection control.
• Fuel gas. Pipe sizing from the tables, testing, appliance connections and venting.
• Fixtures and clearances. Requirements and rough-in dimensions.
• Code administration. Permits, inspections, testing procedures.
• Applied math. Grade and slope, offsets, capacities, conversions.

The single most important fact about your exam

It follows your jurisdiction’s adopted plumbing code: Uniform Plumbing Code or International Plumbing Code, in a specific edition, possibly with local amendments. Sizing answers differ between the two codes. Study materials keyed to the wrong code teach you confident wrong answers, which are worse than no answers. Your board’s candidate bulletin names the code and edition; get that document first.

How to prepare

1. Get the bulletin, confirm the code and edition, and learn what you may take in. Open-book rules, tabbing and notes policies vary.
2. Drill the tables. Fixture-unit tables, vent sizing, gas pipe sizing. Speed comes from repetition with the physical book you will carry into the exam.
3. Do the math cold. Slope per foot, percent grade, simple offsets. These are free marks for a prepared candidate.
4. Practice navigation sprints. Question to code section in under a minute, repeatedly, across every chapter.

Preparation in exam order: bulletin first, tables always

Where it bites

• Local amendments override the model code. A jurisdiction can adopt the IPC and still amend venting rules. The amendments are examinable.
• Time pressure fails more candidates than difficulty. The questions are fair; the clock is not generous. Untimed practice builds false confidence.
