The AWS Certified Welder Program

The AWS Certified Welder program takes the qualification you would earn anyway, at an employer or test facility, and puts it in a national registry that travels with you. It is the closest thing welding has to a portable license, and for welders who change employers or chase project work, portability is the whole point.

What it is

You test at an AWS Accredited Testing Facility to a published procedure, or to a customer-supplied one. Pass, and AWS records the qualification under your name in its national registry. An employer anywhere can verify it. The credential’s scope is exactly the scope of the test you passed: process, material, thickness range, position, code.

Why it beats a shop-only qual

• Portability. Shop quals typically live and die with the employer’s quality system. Registry quals survive job changes.
• Verifiability. A superintendent can check the registry instead of trusting paperwork.
• Maintenance. The program maintains certification with periodic submission of evidence that you are still welding within scope, in line with the continuity logic of the codes.

What it is not

It is not a knowledge exam and not a course completion. There is no classroom requirement: the test is your welding, witnessed and tested. Test prep means practice under the target procedure, not reading.

Getting it

1. Pick the target: the code and scope your market demands. Structural shops want D1.1 coupons; pipe shops want 6G under ASME IX or API 1104.
2. Find an AWS Accredited Testing Facility and confirm which procedures they test to.
3. Practice to the procedure, then test. Bend tests and visual criteria decide it.
4. Keep it alive: follow the program’s maintenance submissions and keep welding within scope.

The test is the same; the registry is what moves between employers

Where it bites

• Testing to the wrong scope wastes money. A 3G plate cert does not sell you into pipe work. Know your market first.
• The registry records what you passed, not what you claim. Scope creep on a resume gets caught at verification.
