A millwright apprenticeship takes about four years, pays you from the first day, and combines full-time work under a journeyworker with classroom instruction on the side. BLS puts the length at about 4 years, and it is the standard route into the trade that installs, moves and rebuilds heavy machinery.
What a millwright actually does
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters describes the scope directly: millwrights install, maintain, diagnose and repair equipment such as compressors, pumps, conveyors, gas and steam turbines, monorails and extruders. That is a wider machine list than most trades touch, and it is the reason the apprenticeship runs four years rather than one.
The other half of the description is the part that surprises people. Precision is a critical skill for millwrights, who sometimes work to specifications requiring tolerances to a thousandth of an inch. This is heavy work done to fine limits: a turbine that weighs several tons gets set to a few thousandths, and both facts are true of the same afternoon.
That combination is what the apprenticeship is really teaching. Rigging a load safely and aligning a shaft to a tenth of a thousandth are opposite-feeling skills that belong to one person.
How the four years work
Registered apprenticeship is an employment relationship, not a school enrollment. You are hired, you are paid, and your training is structured.
On-the-job training is the bulk of it. You work alongside journeyworkers on real installations and repairs, and your wage steps up as you progress through the program’s stages. The specific wage schedule belongs to your program’s standards, so read them before you sign.
Related classroom instruction runs alongside the work, typically evenings or in blocks. This is where the theory lives: print reading, precision measurement, alignment, rigging calculations, hydraulics, bearings, welding and the rest.
Sponsors are usually one of three kinds: a joint labor-management committee (a union local and its contractors, for millwrights most often through the UBC), an individual employer running its own registered program, or an industry association program. The sponsor sets the standards, hires the apprentices and signs off on the hours.
Worked example: what the classroom load looks like
NCCER’s millwright curriculum is a useful concrete measure of the classroom side, because it publishes its hours.
The program runs 4 levels and totals 672.5 hours including the core curriculum, or 795 hours if you take the electives as well. The electives therefore account for 795 − 672.5 = 122.5 hours.
Spread the core-inclusive total across a four-year apprenticeship: 672.5 / 4 = 168.1 hours per year. Over 52 weeks that is 168.1 / 52 = 3.2 hours per week, which is one evening class most weeks with breaks around outages and holidays.

Read that number the right way around. Three hours a week is not a heavy academic load, and it is on top of a full week of physical work, which is why programs lose people to the classroom rather than to the job site. The module list is worth a look before you apply: bearings, couplings and alignment fundamentals, shim fabrication, dial indicator alignment, laser alignment, mechanical seals, vibration analysis, rigging practices, and preventive and predictive maintenance. Every one of those has a lesson in this trade.
Getting in
Typical entry requirements. BLS gives a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for this occupational group. Programs commonly want you to be 18, able to pass a physical and a drug screen, and to have algebra behind you, because the trade is full of arithmetic done on a beam at height.
Where to look.
- apprenticeship.gov, which carries an occupation finder listing registered programs. Millwrights are Standard Occupational Classification 49-9044.00, and searching by occupation and state is the fastest route to programs near you.
- UBC millwright locals, which run the largest share of joint programs in this trade. Call the local rather than emailing; intake windows are often announced by phone and word of mouth.
- Large employers directly. Plants with big maintenance departments (paper, steel, power, food, automotive) sometimes register their own programs and hire straight in.
What helps an application. Any hands-on evidence: a welding class, a shop course, time as a helper, military maintenance experience, a clean driving record. Programs are selecting for people who will still be there in year three.
Pay and outlook
BLS reports these figures for one occupational group that covers industrial machinery mechanics, machinery maintenance workers and millwrights together, so read them as the shape of the field rather than as a millwright-specific wage.
- Median annual wage: $63,510 as of May 2024.
- Spread: the lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,430; the highest 10 percent earned more than $91,620. That is a range of $47,190 between the two ends.
- Growth: 13 percent projected from 2024 to 2034, which BLS calls much faster than the average for all occupations.
- Openings: about 54,200 per year.
Apprentice wages start below all of these and rise on the program’s schedule.
Where it bites
- Millwright is not the same job as industrial machinery mechanic. BLS bundles them, and plants use the titles loosely, but the work differs: millwrights install, dismantle and move machinery and come up through a roughly four-year apprenticeship, while mechanics maintain and repair machinery in place and usually need at least a year of on-the-job training. Know which job an advertisement means before you take it.
- The wage range is wider than the median suggests. A $47,190 spread across the group means the industry you land in and the skills you add afterward do more for your earnings than time served.
- Intake is periodic and competitive. Many locals open applications once or twice a year. Missing the window costs you a year, so find out the schedule now rather than when you are ready.
- Travel is part of some millwright work. Installations and outages happen where the plant is. Some millwrights work one site for a career; others follow the work, and that is a life decision as much as a career one.
- Your hours and sign-offs are your record. Keep your own copy of everything the sponsor signs. Reconstructing four years of documentation later is painful, and occasionally impossible.
