Where to Take the Master Exam

The master exam sits at the same testing vendors as the journeyman exam, booked the same way: board approval first, then a seat with the state’s contracted vendor. Texas runs both through PSI under the same candidate information bulletin family. What changes at master level is not the room, it is the eligibility file you must assemble before the board will approve you.

Eligibility is the real gate

Journeyman eligibility is mostly an hours audit. Master eligibility typically adds years held at journeyman level, and in some states employer verification of the scope of work you supervised. Gather license history and verification letters before applying: the exam booking is the fast part, the eligibility review is the slow one.

Booking and the bulletin

The sequence is the one you already know from the journeyman sitting:

1. Apply to the board with your journeyman history and hours
2. Receive eligibility and a candidate ID
3. Book a seat and pay the vendor
4. Bring photo ID and the exact reference editions the candidate bulletin allows

Read the master bulletin fresh even though you have sat with the vendor before. The reference list is usually longer, calculation-heavy sections change the allowed materials, and time limits differ from the journeyman paper.

Exam day differences that matter

Master papers lean harder on design calculations, so the pacing plan changes: more minutes per mark on load calcs and derating, fewer on lookup questions. The room, check-in, and score report process are the same as your journeyman sitting. Fail one subject area and the score report tells you exactly where the marks went missing; the retake waiting period is in the bulletin.

Where it bites

• Assuming journeyman eligibility carries over. The master application is a new eligibility review, not a top-up. Missing verification letters stall it for weeks.
• Same book, wrong tabs. Your journeyman tabbing was built for lookup speed. Retab for calculation tables: conductor ampacity, derating factors, motor tables, transformer sections.
• Booking the first available seat. Master candidates usually carry a full workload. Book the date your study plan says, not the soonest one.
