Type III covers low-pressure appliances: chillers, in practice. These machines run below atmospheric pressure, which turns the usual logic inside out: instead of refrigerant trying to escape, air is trying to get in. The exam tests whether you understand that inversion.

What Type III tests

  • Low-pressure behaviour: systems operating in a vacuum, why leaks pull air and moisture inward, and what a purge unit does about it.
  • Recovery from vacuum: the required evacuation levels for low-pressure appliances and the particular difficulty of pulling refrigerant from a machine already below atmospheric pressure.
  • Charging and pressurising: how you safely raise pressure for leak testing (controlled means, strict temperature limits) without stressing the rupture disc.
  • Chiller service practices: waterbox work, tube leaks, and the oil and refrigerant sampling habits of plant maintenance.

Who actually needs it

Building-plant and industrial techs, chiller specialists, and anyone on a maintenance contract that includes centrifugal or absorption machines. Residential techs rarely do, but Type III is the difference between Universal and not, and Universal is what commercial employers scan for.

Where it bites

  • Applying high-pressure recovery numbers to low-pressure questions, the levels are different and the exam checks precisely that.
  • The rupture disc and pressurisation limits are safety-critical exact values; treat them as memorisation, not intuition.
