EPA 608 Type II Guide

Type II is the certification most HVAC technicians actually need: high-pressure appliances, which means nearly every residential and light-commercial air conditioner and heat pump in the country. If you charge, recover or repair split systems, this is your exam.

What Type II tests

On top of Core, Type II goes deep on working high-pressure systems:

• Recovery levels: the required evacuation levels for high-pressure appliances, which differ by system size and by whether the compressor works. The exact inches-of-mercury figures are the most-tested numbers on the exam.
• Leak detection and repair: methods from bubbles to electronic detectors, plus the leak-rate obligations on larger charges.
• Service practices: when a system may be opened, use of service valves and access fittings, nitrogen sweeps, and why you evacuate before recharging.
• Refrigerant handling: cylinder rules, mixing prohibitions, and what may be returned to a system versus sent for reclamation.
• Safety at high pressure: the specific hazards of liquid refrigerant and pressurised circuits.

How to prepare

The Learn section’s service sequence (recovery, evacuation, charging, leak detection) is this exam taught as skills; study those lessons and the exam becomes revision. Then memorise the recovery-level table cold: it is pure recall and pure marks.

Where it bites

• The recovery-level numbers change with the rules. Materials written before the current requirements teach outdated figures; study current sources only.
• Bringing Type I passive-recovery logic to Type II questions, high-pressure work assumes self-contained recovery equipment.
