EPA 608 Type I Guide

Type I certification covers small appliances: systems with five pounds or less of refrigerant, hermetically sealed at the factory. Domestic refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, vending machines. If your work is appliances rather than split systems, this is your ticket.

What Type I tests

Beyond the Core foundation, Type I focuses on what makes small sealed systems different:

• Recovery with limited access: small appliances rarely have service valves, so the exam covers piercing valves, when they may stay on a system, and recovery using system-dependent (passive) versus self-contained (active) equipment.
• Recovery requirements: the required recovery percentages for small appliances, with and without a working compressor.
• Disposal rules: what must happen before an appliance goes to scrap, and whose responsibility the refrigerant is.

The open-book question

Type I is the one certification that can be earned through an open-book, non-proctored exam. Two cautions before you take that route: some employers discount open-book cards, and an open-book Core does not count toward Universal. If there is any chance you will grow past appliance work, take a proctored exam and keep the Universal door open.

• Passive recovery questions trip people who have only used modern active machines. Learn both methods: the exam predates your gauge set.
• The five-pound line is about factory charge, not what is left in the system.
