EPA 608 Core: What It Tests

The Core exam is the foundation every EPA 608 path shares: pass it once and it counts toward whichever types you take, now or later. It tests the why of refrigerant regulation and the universal rules that apply to every system regardless of size or pressure.

What Core covers

• Why the rules exist: ozone depletion and the Montreal Protocol lineage, global warming potential, and the current phasedown of high-GWP HFCs.
• Refrigerant families and behaviour: CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs and the incoming A2Ls; pressure-temperature basics; why venting is illegal.
• The three Rs: recover (remove refrigerant in any condition), recycle (clean it on site), reclaim (restore it to specification off site), and which is required when.
• Recovery requirements: required evacuation levels, equipment certification, and what to do with recovered refrigerant.
• Safety: cylinder handling, filling limits, personal protection, and the asphyxiation and toxicity basics.
• Leaks and record-keeping: the leak-rate thresholds and repair obligations that apply to larger appliances.

How to prepare

1. Learn the refrigeration cycle first, the Learn section’s refrigeration sequence is the foundation Core assumes.
2. Study from materials keyed to the current rules; the HFC phasedown and A2L transition have changed answers that were true a decade ago.
3. Take Core proctored. An open-book Core caps you at the small-appliance track; only a proctored Core counts toward Universal.
4. Expect concept questions, not calculations: the exam wants to know you understand what must be recovered, to what level, and why.

The three Rs are different legal acts, and Core tests the difference

Where it bites

• Confusing recover, recycle and reclaim under exam pressure is the classic point-loser; they are legally distinct acts.
• The safety questions read as easy and are missed through overconfidence. Cylinder filling limits are exact numbers: learn them.
