Exam and eligibility details
Texas licenses mold work through TDLR across seven categories: Mold Remediation Worker Registration, Mold Assessment Technician, Mold Remediation Contractor, Mold Assessment Consultant, Mold Assessment Company, Mold Remediation Company and Mold Analysis Laboratory. For the Mold Remediation Contractor licence: $450 licence fee, a certificate from a department-accredited initial mold remediation contractor course, and one of four qualifying routes - a bachelor's or graduate degree in a relevant field plus 1 year hands-on experience; at least 60 college credit hours with a grade of C or better in related sciences plus 3 years; a high school diploma or GED plus at least 5 years; or a professional certification (industrial hygienist, engineer, sanitarian, safety professional, architect) plus 1 year. The examination follows application approval. Renewal fee is $450. There is no grace period: a licence expired 90 days or less renews at 1.5x the fee, and one expired more than 90 days but under 18 months at 2x. Areas of visible mold under 25 contiguous square feet may be cleaned up by an owner or maintenance staff without a licence.
